Race Book 2012

If you remember, a few weekends ago I spent a Saturday afternoon being productive putting together my first race book, with much inspiration from Meghann at Meals and Miles. Well, she's finally here and I'm so excited to show it off! I may or may not have carried it in my gigantuous purse for a week in case I had an opportunity to whip it out if someone ... you know, asked.

It was on my doorstep less than a week after I ordered it - much faster than I had expected and I just about squealed when I saw it on my doormat.

While I'll spare you looking at every single page, I'll show you some of my favorites and why they are so. Obviously, there's some significant ones (i.e. first half marathon), but there's some with fun stories attached that I'll always remember. I think I'm glad this blog is going hand-in-hand with these photos, as I'll always be able to look back and laugh at all the shenanigans I've participated in.

And now for the fun...
First marathon page! Obviously the one that started it all and to kick off this running craze I've caught on to. Love how big my finish photo is and all the fun ones that come along with it!
Color Run is just freaking awesome, and the first race I had done for super fun - without worrying about a time, worrying how long we took, or if I had screwed up. What a freaking blast! This race was done with a few coworkers from my office, a few sorority sisters, a few random folks I've never seen since, but was just such a blast.
I really only like this Warrior Dash bib page because it's the only bib that's not stark white - ha! Love how it still holds on to what the race was all about: getting muddy, let's be honest. And I like that I had actually hung on to the wristband for this one, as it adds a little something extra. I think I want to be certain to hold on to any other race 'extras' so I can dress up some of the pages a little bit more.
Obviously, one of the best times of my life. This page was hard enough to pare down to seven photos for, let alone doing a page of about 30 photos that were so tiny you couldn't actually see them anyway. These seven are from different points in the race, all very accurate as to what was going on and what we were feeling. And, naturally, the group finish had to be the largest of all. Love love love.
I'm so glad that I messed around with photo layouts for every page, so first, they're not all alike, and b, I can really highlight some favorite photos or race moments. Running, participating in, and experiencing Wine and Dine weekend with some really fantastic people was unbelievable. Colleagues, one of my greatest friends, and a longtime friend all came together for a blast of a weekend - helping Heather finish her first half marathon was of course an amazing opportunity, but my first runDisney race surely didn't disappoint!
Peachtree was just crazy it and of itself - you enter a lottery for 60,000 spots, when 80,000 people have entered such lottery, and well... you don't get in, naturally. So I bought a bib about a week before the race and well... for a whopping hour and a half, I was Ashley. It's like a whole new identity!
And I really enjoy that the back of the book allowed me to incorporate some photos with it too! Adds a little flare and fun to the entire thing, not just on the front!

Have you ever made a race book of any kind - whether printed or scrapbooked? What are your favorite race experiences that you like to highlight?

PS. This also makes for post 200! Crazy talk!

Track Tuesday 11

My Track Tuesdays have become any day but Tuesdays as of lately - Wednesday, Thursday, Tuesday. Who needs a real schedule, anyway?
This week I joined our coach Al at his regular Tuesday clinic, only because Chandler wouldn't be with me this week and he knew I'd do better in a group (glad he catches on fast!). So at the bright, shining hour of 5:30 am, I was on the track with his regulars. Mind you, these were the same folks who blasted past me a few weeks ago, but also who therefore are the ones that push me to the max - and to what I know I am capable of.

Today's work out was 400 repeats, number varying per our abilities. Al set me up for 8 x 400s, which is a push I haven't done in awhile. I don't know if it was the frustration from Sunday's race coming out in me, but I kicked off on a great start with my first two laps at 1:49 and 1:50. It was then I realized that maybe I can gauge myself better than I thought (I also had a great anchor and great rabbit to chase that I used to pace myself). But check these suckers out!
I don't know what the Split 2 is all about. Haha.
My 400 splits have never been this consistent, ever, and look! The last repeat was the fastest?! Who am I? Cooled down with 1 easy mile and called it a morning. What a great way to start my Tuesday and an even better motivation and confidence booster going into the half marathon this week!

Race Report: Junior League Atlanta Shamrock 'n Roll 10K

Shamrock 'n Roll Road Race | March 10 | Atlanta

My Athens running friend Jennifer found this race a few weeks back and I signed up for it about a week and a half ago, just because... well, I could. I was looking forward to having two excuses to buy fun St. Patrick's Day items and a plethora of green things: this race and for Publix the following week. Who doesn't love dressing up? The JLA sponsors this 5 and 10K every year, now headed into it's 9th year!
Race outfit preview on Instagram yesterday morning!
Sunday morning Jennifer and I met in town at 6:45 to get down to Atlanta by 7:45 so we could get our packets and bibs, get our stuff back to the car, and warm up before the 10K started at 8:30. First off, super glad I know where Atlantic Station is because the directions on their website are rather incorrect and take you to the wrong side of the highway. That made me kind of grumpy from the start - not a great way to start race morning. We got parked and up to the race packet pick up and headed straight back to the car to throw our stuff in and get finally ready for the race. I felt kind of discombobulated this morning, as I hadn't had anything to drink (oops?), didn't have my shoes on when we got there (flip flops), and was still wearing my compression socks that I had worn to bed the night before. I looked a mess, probably.
At least now an all-green mess! Top 'o the morning to ya!
By the time we had gotten back upstairs, the 5Kers had just taken off and our turn would be in a bit. I certainly appreciated how many folks took the green-theme to heart: folks in kilts, lots of folks in St. Patty's knee-high socks (Target's got a ton if you're looking for some cute ones!), and folks in green racing shirts of all kinds. Love! The morning turned out spectacularly beautiful - cool, but clear skies and was forecasted to be over 60 by this afternoon (hello, spring!). And soon enough, the 10Kers were off.

I hadn't quite decided if I wanted to run or race this 10K. I think my lungs were still slightly recovering from that nasty infection post-marathon, but I also knew I'd been feeling great lately and (especially) after this past week's track workout, I feel like I had the potential in me to make good things happen. I figured I'd just go and really, see what happened. Remember that a sub-1 hour 10K is one of my major running/fitness goals for 2013.

Jennifer and I started in almost the back of the 10K pack (they had signage to split up the runners, walkers, strollers, etc., which I appreciated, though no one followed alone), and ended up bobbing and weaving the entire first half mile just trying to get around the walkers. Frustrating, but whatever, it happens, especially on a course with 2000+ runners (for both 5K and 10K combined) on a course in downtown Atlanta.

Regardless of all that weaving, I ran my first mile in 8:55 - um, oops. That's definitely not 10K race pace for me and barely slower than 5K race pace even! But again, I thought I'd just go out and see what I could do, right? Right. Heading up into mile 2 was the first of the course's hills (only two, according to previous year's course maps from Map My Run), which I handled pretty easily. The race flattens out again near the IKEA, around the back of the store, up another slight hill (where I walked for the first time) and back around the neighborhood into the back side of Atlantic Station again, where I hit mile 3 at 28. I knew that if I kept it up, I'd have a sub-1 hour 10K in my pocket for sure!
Before I go further, I will note that this race's website indicate that the course was USATF certified - no clarification as to which course, so I think most folks (safely) assumed both. They did mention that they were moving the start and finish lines compared to last year, but they were still in the same general vicinity as before. Because the Peachtree lottery system opens this week, a ton of folks were using this as their qualifying 10K to try and better their Wave placement for Peachtree. That being said...

The 10K route is just two loops of the 5K route. I still don't like repeating courses, but especially when trying to qualify or PR, it's nice to know what lies ahead. The second time around, I ran all the way up the first hill again, and walked the tail-end of the second one so I/ could gun it back into the last mile and a half of the race. The course turned back into Atlantic Station and despite seeing a mile marker for mile 6, my watch was barely at 5.4. I thought there was no way this was right, but maybe we did an extra loop through Atlantic Station to make up for it? Wrong. We turned in, went a "block" past the 5K finish line, and we were done. Before I even crossed the line I knew my watch was significantly short, but was sincerely disappointed to see that my watch was only 5.57 miles - are you kidding? This course is certified and .63 miles short? That's a tenth of the race that's missing! Jennifer and a few other folks around us confirmed that their watches, iPhones and apps all said the 10K was quite short too. Something wasn't right here.
Confused about this course, but smiling anyway.
I let myself get distracted by food and snacks for awhile, and they started 5K age group awards, which were super cute medals with the race logo. Between the 5K and 10K awards, they had some students from a local Irish Dance Studio come perform. Have to say that was pretty cool - such talent and a really neat tradition to keep running in a family. They were beautiful to watch. It was then that I hopped on Instagram for the first time since 7 that morning and saw that my IG friend Amanda was at the race too - mind you, it we've literally only 'met' on Instagram, but found out that we both work in student affairs (she down at Emory) and are major run-aholics, so really, it was destined we'd meet eventually. Through a series of messages on Instagram, we got to meet up! Woot! Hooray for new connections and for stalking each other based on descriptions of our outfits, we finally connected. So great meeting you Amanda!

We decided it was time to head home finally and made our way to the car and back to Athens. Not long after I got home that I hopped on the Shamrock Facebook page and saw a woman had posted that her Garmin marked the course at 5.67 miles, and was curious if anyone else's had as well - there were about 8 or 9 of us that responded, all with varying distances, but all well under 6 miles! Someone from the race page commented that it appeared that the 10Kers had been mis-directed and "missed a loop" in the course. The original woman posted again saying that she took her Garmin map and the course map from the website... and they matched exactly. That was really frustrating to hear, and you can see that mine match too (mine's the bottom, of course):
Several hours later, a few posts from the page had been deleted (including the original chain I mentioned above), and the JLA was posting this to many people's comments about the race being short:
So apparently the 10K is not certified, contrary to website verbiage) and there were some snafus. According to the course map, I still don't see any loop that could have been missed. I, thankfully, am not using this as a Peachtree qualifier, but I am royally disappointed because this could have my been my first legit sub-1 hour 10K. Had I kept on pace (and then some) for the last .7 miles, I would have finished just around the 58' mark, which would have been that sub-1 and a 2+ minute PR. Frustration.

Damn good morning!
I am not sure how I feel, now some time  removed from the race, but I sure hope JLA figures out what happened and corrects the issue. I hope for the sake of the folks who were intending on using this as their Peachtree qualifier that they still can and that the ATC will recognize their race as a qualifying one again. Disappointing, overall, but hopefully there will be measures to correct such things. I'm happy with my performance, which is all you can ask for at the end of a day like this, but still disappointed that I can't count this as my glorious goal 10K time.

If a race is short, do you  count your PR as a PR? Or do you just count it as-is, noting that the course was short?

Track Tuesday 10 & A Blogging Award!

My Track Tuesdays have become any day but Tuesdays as of lately - last week on Wednesday and this week, just yesterday. You can read all about it from last week's TT post! This week, we were scheduled for Wednesday but the winds were so crazy Tuesday night, our coach cancelled and opted to have us meet Thursday morning. Come Thursday morning, after an hour and a half of wide-awakeness, I slept through/missed/snoozed my alarm and all but missed our workout. I was kind of angry, as I had actually looked forward to it, but hit the gym after work and made up for it.

The work out that morning was a mile warm up, 3 miles at race pace with 1-minute rest inbetween, and 1 mile cool-down. Check it outttttt:

When did I ever think that would be possible? Uh, never. While the last mile of the three certainly was troublesome, and I desperately just wanted to stop my watch and call it a day, I opted to power through as hard as I could and see what the result would be. I'm super satisfied!

Earlier this week, I Run With It nominated me for a Leibster Award! This is basically a pass-along award for bloggers – kind of like the new version of those meme quizzes that were all the rage (do you prefer hugging or kissing?). So the rules are that I answer her fabulous 11 questions, post 11 random facts about me, and ask 11 more questions to the bloggers I tag.

Why 11? Who knows, but you'll do it. And enjoy.

11 Questions from I Run With It

  1. If you could run any race in the world (money/qualification is no object), which race would you run? My current obsession is the Caribbean Islands Marathon Cruise. Yes, please! But also, I really want to go run the Budapest Marathon. And the Great Wall Marathon. Okay, can I just run all of them?
  2. What’s the weirdest thing you ever saw on a run? Oh gosh, I don't know. I run in a pretty heavily residential area, but also one that's got patches of trees and wooded areas, so it doesn't really phase me to see random road trash, and gosh knows what else. I couldn't think of the 'weirdest' though!
  3. Cake or pie? Cake. Always.
  4. What’s the least successful/craziest diet you’ve ever tried? I can't say I've ever been on a 'diet.'
  5. What’s your favorite cross training activity? Or do you just run? My only regular cross-training activity is cycling (at the gym). One day I'll have the courage to start swimming again, and/or find something else fun to do.
  6. What song never fails to pump you up? Thrift Shop. Current guilty pleasure.
  7. What’s your favorite vegging out snack? Pickles. Pickle spears, specifically, by my dear friends at Claussen. I like pickles that crunch and are crispy.  And their spears are my fave!
  8. Yoga pants: only for yoga or always appropriate? I'm by means no yogi, but they're so dang comfortable! But no, I don't wear them in public.
  9. Around the house: shoes, slippers, socks or bare feet? There is no regular, honestly. It's rarely just socks, it's never shoes, and probably changes between slippers and bare feet. I'm indecisive, what can I say?
  10. What’s your favorite race/running picture (of yourself)? This one!

11. When’s your favorite time for a long run? Morning, hands down. I hate wasting a day with running for two hours smack in the middle of the day. So silly! There's nothing like the accomplishment of starting a day (or weekend) with a good, solid workout.

11 Random Facts About Me

  1. I'm on a quest to get to all 50 states by the time I'm 30. I have 19 states to go (mostly on the east coast, funny enough) and two and a half years left. Ready to get to work!
  2. My younger sister lives in New York City and I'm so proud of her for up-rooting herself and finding a new home that she is loving and living every minute of.
  3. I've broken one bone: my arm, right at my elbow, by falling off the monkey bars in first grade. My cast was hot pink!
  4. I have a food texture issue - simply defined, I don't like things that are more creamy in consistency but have chunky stuff in them (i.e. clam chowder), but I'm totally okay with stuff that's more chunky in consistency and has a cream base (i.e. cottage cheese). Make sense? No? I didn't think so, but go with it, okay? :)
  5. My biggest pet peeve in life (among others) are folks who don't turn off their turn signal.
  6. I say y’all in real life (a lot). I said it in undergrad, just because I picked it up, but I didn't hear it a lot. Since living in Texas, and especially now in Georgia, it's all I say. "You guys," the California version of such verbiage, doesn't even sound correct to me anymore (and really, let's be gender-neutral, shall we?).
  7. Being that I work at a college, I'm also a total nerd about visiting college campuses. There's a map I have in my office of 1200+ colleges and universities in the country and I've got a sticker on each campus I've been to. Love it!
  8. I've watched all of How I Met Your Mother, just through repeats, and therefore never in succession. I'm finally all the way through Season 2 on Netflix... in order.
  9. I'm competitive. Like, really competitive. The concept of running my own race, though I know it's mentally healthier, is really difficult!
  10. My first pet was a rabbit named Snowy. Contradictory to what you might think, she was not all white.
  11. When I'm tired, I can sleep just about anywhere, sitting upright, or in a ball on the floor. It will surprise you.

11 Questions for My Favorites (that's you!)

  1. What's your biggest food weakness? That one thing that you'd never be able to stop eating, despite what a diet might tell you?
  2. Favorite beverage of all time?
  3. Backstreet Boys, N Sync, or 98 Degrees? (I love me some 90's boy bands)
  4. When did you start running?
  5. What is your favorite race distance?
  6. Would you consider yourself a Phoebe, Monica, or Rachel?
  7. Are there any textures (food or otherwise) that weird you out?
  8. What was your first pet?
  9. Your number one desired travel spot?
  10. If you could go back to school and get your degree in anything, what would you do?
  11. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

The Others (awesome bloggers who I read – and you should, too!)

  1. Chandler T
  2. Life is an Adventure
  3. Boston Bound Brunette
  4. Noshing on Asphalt
  5. Planes, Trains and Running Shoes
  6. Curly Runner Bug

February Recap

february.

Total run mileage: 45
Highest weekly run mileage:
31 (keep in mind that was the first weekend in february, which so happened to be marathon weekend...)
# Runs: 7
# Rest days: LOTS! 20
# Cross-training workouts: 2
# Races: 2
     - Surf City Marathon

Favorite run: Surf City, as if you expected any less. I have a lot of post-race and post-race-month thoughts, but that's for another post. I'm a marathoner. And I have Surf City to thank. But even that, it was a personally fabulous weekend, running with an amazing group of women I'm lucky enough to call friends, having them and my family at the finish line, and knowing that I accomplished what I set out to do. You can't beat that feeling!
Most hardcore run: Did you expect a different answer? Nope, sorry. Surf City. :)

Current reads: Working on our Dean's book club read, What the Best College Students Do by Ken Bain. We meet every other Friday for a good discussion - I need to get caught up on reading a few chapters, but digging it so far.

Current obsession: Getting in as much home time as I can. It's been a great trip, it's been great being home and I'm just trying to soak up every minute of it while I can.

Current drink: Water. It's so funny that for as sick of water as I was post-marathon (and pre-marathon, for that matter), I've been really good about sticking to it at work, and water only. At home, it's orange juice and cran-grape for splurges, but am trying to stick to my 80 oz of water a day, just to ensure I'm still taking care of myself well!

Current song: I never did a January recap, so this:
But also this:
Loving Imagine Dragons and they've made for some great additions to my running music. Check them out if you haven't yet.

Current need: To feel 100% back in this fitness game! Last week I let myself slack a little bit as I was getting back in the saddle, but now that I've got that 'easy' week under my belt, I want to know that I can jump back in and rock things. Ready to get moving and feel like myself again. I know my body needed those 20+ rest days I got in February, but man... mentally? That was rough. Worse than tapering. True story.

Current triumph: Still saying that I'm a marathoner. I don't think that will ever get old. Every time I put on my jacket, or look at the medal or look back through photos (again and again) on Facebook, it seems so real. And yet, very unreal, admittedly. Who knows when it'll sink in!
Current bane of my existence: Lots of up in the air things about what 2013 will bring me! [Insert cryptic statements here.]

Current goal: Work through these post-marathon blues (I can still have them 4 weeks later, can't I?) and getting back on track. Check out my collaborative post on motivation and struggling through it with my dear friend Amma on her blog here!

What are your biggest accomplishments from this month?
