Friday Favorites #5

Another edition of Friday faves, comin' atcha - I'm seriously bursting with excitement today because there is just SO much going on lately and I can't wait to share it all! Squee! First and foremost...

1. Holidays at Disneyland open TODAY!

I'm the biggest holiday sucker ever and Christmas at Disneyland is quite possibly one of my favorite things on the face of the planet. So excited. Especially since we're now passholders, I can go check out California Adventure, because I've never seen that side of the park at Christmastime, so it's even more excitement. I am very much one of those wide-eyed, child-like 30-year-olds who squeals every time she sees something new at the parks. Cannot wait.

Have you also seen the holiday food list? Yeah, lots of those are happening!

2. I get to see my bestie today!
Tina's in from Phoenix for work in downtown LA and decided to take another day on to come visit (thanks Jon!). I haven't seen her since Ragnar Del Sol in February and while her cutie patootie kiddos aren't coming along, I'm excited to just have time with her! Best yet, we're running the Lace Up 10K tomorrow out in Palos Verdes before she flies home! Bestie time AND running time. Cannot wait.

3. Weekend Adventures
I can't spill the beans too much here, but aside from running the Lace Up 10K tomorrow, I'll then be heading up to Ventura on Saturday afternoon to pace the Surfer's Point Half on Sunday (use code BEAST to save 30% if you want in!). Stoked for more pacing fun! I was supposed to run the Lace Up half, but decided to downgrade to the 10K (super challenging course) as I got moved up from the 2:30 to 2:00 pacer this week for Sunday and I don't want to blow it!

Sunday holds more adventures, but again... can't share details just yet! More to come!

4. Races Galore!
I love having a full race schedule. By no means do I race all of these, and I think right now I have a healthy mix of races I'm running for me and races that I'm pacing, so I know I won't go all-out every single time. It works wonderfully. My new addition to the race schedule is pacing a Turkey Trot 15K on Thanksgiving!

It's an inaugural race not far from me, so I am excited! And it's more than just a 5K, so I'll get my turkey and food fill later for sure. Want to join me? Use code BEAST for $5 off when you register for the Riverside Turkey Trot (5K and 15K offered)!

Happy Friday, friends!

What are you looking forward to this weekend?

Meet Beets Blu! | Product Review

I’ve long pondered the concept of heart rate training versus just run-it-all-out-and-if-your-heart-beats-too-hard-slow-down training, but have never gone as far as researching or seeing what it all really means. I was more than floored and excited when Beets Blu reached out to me a little while back and asked if I wanted to test our their Heart Rate Monitor – considering I’d never even messed with the one that came with my Garmin, I figured why not check one out? Theirs seemed simple enough to use and syncs with your phone app, so surely it’s meant for newbies like me. Bonus: I got a fun little key-finder fob – ask me how many times I lose my keys a week and where I’ve found them (re: twice in the front door lock. Overnight. Yes, I win at life).

Beets Blu is a company specializing in mobile apps and fitness technology, and is fairly new in the fitness world, having just been founded in 2012. Their products include the heart rate monitor, the pager tag (key finder) and a smart scale.

I first wanted to play with the HRM during the Ventura Half back in September. The night before the race, Doug and I messed around with it, to get it set up and figure out how this sucker works. Much to my happiness, it’s SO easy – download the free corresponding smart phone app, set up your profile and personal settings, and sync the HRM to your phone via Bluetooth.

I was expecting the strap to be really uncomfortable and awkward, but I lined it up right under the rim of my sports bra, so I hardly noticed it was there. The whole thing is really light, and aside from indents on the tighter spots of where my bra hits, you couldn’t even tell that I had worn it for 2+ hours during the half.

The app is quite simple, and again as a novice HRM user/researcher/nerd, I am not sure what it’s missing that I’d still like to have. For a newbie like me, it’s perfect to see where my high points are and where I work hardest. For folks who might be more advanced in HRM nerdiness, the cool part is that it also syncs to other HRM apps and other devices (RunKeeper, Garmin, etc.), so you can continue using any platform you may have been on before!

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised with Beets Blu’s HRM and am looking forward to getting nerdy with it in the future as I read up more on heart rate training and what it all means.

The app could be a downfall to some – but I like its simplicity!

Do you run with a heart rate monitor?

I received the Beets Blu Wireless Bluetooth Smart 4.0 Heart Rate Monitor free of charge in exchange for a product review. I was not compensated for this blog post other than receiving the products, and all opinions are my own.

Race Report: Revel Canyon City Half Marathon

Revel Canyon City Half Marathon | November 7, 2015
Azusa, CA

Revel calls Colorado, Utah and California home – the Azusa race is in just its second year and while I heard so much about it last year, I just never got my act in order to sign up. Thankfully, I was given the opportunity to pace again (thank you Beast Pacing!) and got to experience the mountainside course for myself.

Canyon City has a net loss of 900 feet for the half and just over 5000 for the full, which provides some ample opportunity for a PR if you treat the course right. The half has some good rollers in the midst of the course, so if you’re doing the full and fly down the first half, you’re in for some fun times on tired legs on those rollers. Thankfully, there’s a great downhill finish that if you haven’t trashed your legs yet, you can totally handle. This course, because of that, reminded me very much of Fontana and its PR-ability.

Beast Pacing's half marathon pacers!
At any rate, I was signed up to pace the 2:10 half group and got paired up with Patty (super speedy lady!) and Bear (who was pacing for the first time ever). I’ve never paced with TWO other people, but I had a freaking blast with these two and I hope our group did too!

There are some outstandingly gorgeous views along the course, which is something that this race certainly beats Fontana for:

Half marathoners and marathoners park in two separate locations to ensure they catch the correct buses to the top; half marathoners parked at Citrus College. The only issue with this is that it’s a 2-lane road up to Citrus, but with the buses parked up one side, it essentially left one lane open for traffic to get in to the parking lot which left a little congestion. I was scheduled to meet a number of other pacers at 4:55 to get them their bags and our pacing signs in order, so though I was only a few minutes late, it left me a little flustered trying to get myself in order!

It was super chilly – I mean, we’re halfway up a mountain here – but the great folks at Revel (partially) prepare you with including a pair of gloves and a mylar blanket in your race packet. One less thing to remember, so thanks Revel! I went to Walmart the night before and bought a pair of throwaway sweats and a sweatshirt. I stripped the pants before the race start to let my legs adjust to the temps, but kept the sweatshirt on until at least a mile in and the gloves through almost mile 4. Though the sun was up, the canyon is so deep and winding, that there are sections of warm sun followed by near-freezing corners in the shadows.

I need to be honest and say I’ve never had this much FUN running a half – it was like we were counting miles (kind of), but they honestly just FLEW by. Easy run, beautiful scenery, fantastic weather, like it was all coming together for a gloriously beautiful day in Azusa Canyon. Just like that, we were ticking to mile 11! At mile 12, we told our group that we had quite a window open so if they felt good, they needed to go with it and get to the finish on their own terms.

In fact, we had such a window, that we walked the last block and then SKIPPED our way into the finish line. No lie:

And just like that, we were done!

At the finish line, there were drinks on drinks on drinks (including horchata energy drinks? Ew), bananas, bagels and – my favorite part – PIE! Marie Callendar’s choices of apple, lemon or pumpkin pie. Heck. Yes. This is only the second race I know of that does pie at the finish and I tell you, it’s nothing to scoff at. More pie, please.

I hung out at the finish line for over an hour to cheer in the likes of Jen, Sandy, Carlee and dozens of other folks, including the rest of our pacing team. I watched marathoners cry at the finish for a massive new PR or lots of BQs or New York qualifying times and got goosebumps as each runner fell apart at the finish in sheer elation. There’s nothing like being at the end of a marathon – wow!

I jogged the quarter-mile back to the parking lot and called it a day. A great run, great race, great medal, great PIE, and great fun watching the finish line, but it was time to get home, nap, and call it a day!

Race Pros:
- PR-able course
- Race packets included gloves & mylar blankets as added perks
- Giant, beautiful finishers medal
- Finish line pie & energy!

Race Cons:
- Need to continue figuring out parking logistics
- Apparently some buses got lost going to the top (what?), thankfully not mine

Did you run Revel Canyon this year, or any of the Revel races? Your thoughts?

October Recap

Sitting here watching the NYC live stream on a gorgeous Sunday morning, cheering on elites and friends! One day I'll get there!

Total run mileage: 110.2! Mission accomplished.
Highest weekly run mileage: 34.6 -- you know, two halfs in a week will do that to you! Let alone the three halfs in 8 days I did... :)
# Runs: 23
# Rest days: 10.
# Cross-training workouts: Lots of walking - around Portland, around New York, around Denver... lots of walking and exploring this month. I've been lucky.
# Races: Lots of races! And lots more in November!
Favorite run: A super fabulous Halloween run yesterday with my run club ladies. Alice, the Queen and of course the Tweedles all checked in for an amazing 10 miler to round out my 110 mile goal - done and done! I love this run club and loved seeing how much people get in the spirit of Halloween, costumes, and all things fun!

Hardest Run: That back-to-back #BKtoLB madness. See recaps for more, but man! As awesome as I felt in Brooklyn and having a 55-degree race start, going from that to a 100+-degree finish in Long Beach was difficult. I had a great time during the last 5K at Long Beach, but that was no joke! My legs were tired, and I definitely got to the point where it was just about the finish line, not the finish time!

Current need: Honestly? No needs. I'm making my mileage goals, survived the madness that October was (I spent nearly half the month away from home in three different states) and am feeling PUMPED to get through November and December and blast my 1000 mile goal out of the water. I. Got. This.

Current favorite: Spending Halloween with this guy at Disneyland. He got his costume for work on Thursday night (he was a banana), I had no costume, and we really had no idea what we wanted to do. A concert was thrown around, the idea of Disney post-run club and post-football for him, but we really couldn't make up our minds. Disneyland was a most excellent choice. T-minus 12 days until Christmastime at Disneyland (my absolute favorite!).

Current goal: Now that I hit that 110-month goal, I've got my eyes on 1000 and I know it's actually in reach. I need to hit 113 in both November and December, but hoping that between the four half marathons I have in November, I can blast way past 113 and have an easy December. Time will only tell, but now that I know it's in sight, I'm really excited to get there!

Month Goals: I made most of my October goals, or at least made good progress towards them, so I am super pumped about that.
  • 110 miles: Done and done! November goal: 115.
  • Start Strength Training: I didn't do anything. Seriously. With this fall running + pacing calendar, I need to get on it. November goal: strength train at least one time per week.
  • Cut Back on the Soda: I'm doing okay at this still, but need to be better about sodas when I eat out. I'm upwards of 95 ounces of water a day, but still let myself indulge. That's okay, but would like to cut down a bit more too. November goal: Keep up 95 ounces per day / 1-2 sodas per week.
  • Pay Off One Credit Card!: Done! Technically, this card is temporarily paid off, as I got a cash advance on my travel for my upcoming conference in Denver for work, but it still feels good to be collecting 0% interest on it for a few weeks! Still a win. November goal: Pay minimums + pay off half of Denver trip with remaining budget.
An awesome October. I accomplished one of my year goals of running in two new states this year which was awesome (Oregon and New York make states #8 and 9).  I got to spend my birthday weekend in October with Doug, then fly to New York to visit my sister and run some more, and come back to run Long Beach and see Doug finish his 2nd of 3 races to finish the Beach Cities Challenge! I am excited and roarin' up for the fall and winter racing and pacing season (lots coming up!) and am feeling pretty psyched about it all!

Oregon, done!
What are your biggest accomplishments from this month? What are you looking forward to next month?
