When the Year Doesn't Start Out Right

If you follow me on any other source, you know I've been fighting a cold basically this entire week - I woke up last Saturday with that pre-sickness lump in my throat, went gallavanting through the snow on an amazing snowshoeing adventure, and woke up on New Year's Eve feeling like death. Since then, I've progressed and moved backwards throughout the week (no thanks to that red-eye flight back to Atlanta) and here I am... antsy as ever

I've got a marathon in 29 days, people!

Needless to say, I'm a little frazzled at the fact that I haven't ran since Sunday, nor have had the energy to even go hop on a bike just to go do something. I'm contemplating that tomorrow. I've been googling 'running while sick' or 'running with a chest cold' but deep down, I know the best answer is rest. You see, my colds aren't just colds - anything more than laying up on the couch for a week sends me into a downward spiral towards a bronchial infection with a side of asthmatic tendencies and basically, it sucks.

I'm pounding myself with orange juice, taking it easy, loading up on Sudafed during the day and knocking out with NyQuil every evening. I'm just not good at resting. I never have been. (Now you can imagine what I was like after both knee surgeries!)

But here I am. Losing a full week of training. Antsy. Nerves are kicking in after all this marathon talk with my family at home. And I just want to run. Help convince me that I should be resting - I know I should be, but please... words of encouragement, support? Tell me that missing a week won't kill me in three weeks? I don't want to look like this come Surf City day:

What's your mantra while sick - are you on the couch, or are you out pounding pavement anyway?

  1. REST. love, mom. ;)

I'll be momma now and make you rest, just like you're yelling at me to go to the doctor.

  2. Typically I rest. I did run with a chest cold last spring, and it actually helped me break up and cough up a lot of build up (I know - TMI). If I had dizziness/lightheadedness I would definitely just rest - you don't want to pass out or anything :)

Don't worry, you will be pounding that pavement again quickly! Aaaaaaaaand you will ROCK the marathon!

  3. I've been there: twisted my ankle on a run on Oct 17 before my marathon on Nov 18. Wasn't even able to walk until 3 days later, didn't go on a single run until 6 days later.

Rest now, run later. It's going to suck when you start up again, yes, but it's a far better outcome than pushing yourself to the breaking point. Trust me on that.

    1. Thanks Shannon! I do remember your ankle drama... and that's probably a lot worse than a pesky cold. And you survived.

      ... so I can too, right? :)

    2. Exactly :) Trust your training. You'll have three more weeks after to pick up the slack again; you'll be more than ok.

Also: I'm leaving Sunday to head back to Pittsburgh. Would you be around Saturday to perhaps grab some coffee? :)

    1. Duuuuude I remember that. And you still ran lots. Crazy talk. I think my training has gone well, I just wish I could get a higher mileage run in. I think that's what's driving me crazy most, but I've got to deal with that part. Such is life.

      Thankssssssss! I miss you!

  5. Not with a chest cold - give it a couple of days. You'll get better faster, so you can get in the last few weeks of training. If you run yourself down you'll be sicker longer, and miss more training.
